Welcome to the Burton upon Stather parish website. The site has been created by the Parish Council and covers Burton upon Stather, Normanby and Thealby. It is intended for local people and anyone who has an interest in our area.

The Parish is situated five miles north of Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire and sits on the short range of hills above the last few miles of the River Trent. The area has had a mixed and varied history, at one stage it was a flourishing small village that provided the main crossing point across the River Trent, and as a result benefited from the passing trade.

As further crossings were established across the Trent, the value of the local ferry diminished, and with it, the prosperity of the village. It was only when the boatyard was established in 1788 that the population started to increase, further enhanced by the opening of the local steel making plant in 1910. The population has increased steadily, until to-day, the number is just under 3,000. To see the comparison in land use, compare the map of 1900, to one of 1990, and you will see that there has been a significant amount of residential building undertaken. Please note that the scale of the 1900 map is 1:2,500, whereas the scale of the 1980 map is 1:25,000, a factor of 10. However, the differences are very noticeable.

When you walk down the High Street, the buildings have changed little in over 100 years, largely as a result of the area having Conservation Area status. The only real change that a visitor from bygone times would see, is the change of use of some of the buildings and houses.

Are you new to the Parish? Would you like more information about the Parish? If you would, then contact the Parish clerk at clerk@burton-upon-stather.org.uk, or call 01724 720191 and request an information pack. In addition, a village plan was created in November 2006 which gives a snap shot of the views of the parish. To download your copy, please click here.

If your organisation would like to have its own website, you can use the facilities provided by http://beehive.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/. A page web page could be situated on the Parish website, which the webmaster would create, with a link to your specific website located on the behive website. No IT skills are required to maintain the site, and all you need do is contact webmaster@burton-upon-stather.org.uk. An example of a behive site is that used by the village primary school.
