HOW IT STARTED
Burton in Bloom started as an Open Gardens group in September 1995 when some enthusiastic individuals considered opening their gardens for the benefit of
the village. All organisations were invited to participate but initially there was only support from the Church and Village Hall committee. For the first two years the money raised was equally divided between both
organisations.
In September 1998 the committee was approached to ask if the proceeds of the 1999 event could be used to provide some facilities for the young people in the
village. For the first time the event lasted for the whole of the weekend with many more organisations becoming involved and the expanded organisation became Burton in Bloom.
THE AIMS
At this point a constitution was written which clarified the aims of the organisation. These are:
- The involvement of the village groups and individuals in activities to develop a sense of community.
- The proceeds of the fundraising events should be used for the benefit of the village.
HANGING BASKETS
The Burton in Bloom committee, aware that the Parish Council provided £200 for the provision of village hanging baskets, offered to take over this task.
Many more baskets could be provided from the funding as young plants are bought and cared for by the committee before being hung in the High Street. Last year we extended this by the committee funding and providing
baskets for Christmas.
MEMBERSHIP OF THE GROUP
All members of the Burton in Bloom committee are volunteers and we are always looking for new members who would be willing to either:
- Join the committee
- Offer to help with the tasks (hanging up bunting, planting bulbs etc)
- Open their garden in June
We would particularly appreciate some input from Normanby and Thealby residents.
Burton in Bloom exists because the members of this small committee are willing to give their time and talents to improving the village. The fund raising is
not the most important reason for existing – that belongs to the first aim in the constitution – involving village groups and individuals to develop a sense of community. If you can help to achieve this,
in any way at all, then please help.
THE FUTURE
The committee are currently spending the funds on planting bulbs in the village and on the approach roads. However, if you have an idea for improving the
village then do let us know.
